Anyone allowed private use of a company car pays tax on a benefit in kind: catalogue value x age factor x 6/7 x CO2 percentage, with a 2026 minimum of 1,690 euros per year. The calculator above computes it instantly.
How is the benefit calculated?
The formula: catalogue value (including options and VAT, without discounts) x age factor x 6/7 x CO2 percentage. The CO2 percentage starts at 5.5 percent at the reference emissions (2026: 70 g/km petrol, 58 g/km diesel) and rises or falls 0.1 percent per gram of difference, with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 18 percent. Electric cars sit at the 4 percent minimum. The catalogue value declines 6 percent per year from the second year, down to 70 percent.
What does it cost you net?
The benefit is added to your taxable pay and taxed at your top rate; on your payslip it appears as withholding tax on the benefit. An own contribution paid to your employer is deducted from the benefit. Rule of thumb: a modern mid-range car costs you 75 to 200 euros net per month, an electric car the minimum. In return you pay no own car, insurance, maintenance or fuel: net, the company car remains a strong benefit in almost every case.
Company car or mobility budget?
More and more employers offer the federal mobility budget as an alternative: using the car budget for a smaller or electric car, bicycle allowance and public transport, or even rent or mortgage near work. For those who drive little, that can be more attractive net than the car itself. Compare the whole package with our pay package guide or the gross-to-net calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Do I pay social security on my company car?
No, you don't: as an employee you only pay withholding and income tax on the benefit. Your employer does pay a CO2 solidarity contribution to social security. That is why a car weighs differently from ordinary gross pay.
Is an electric company car always more advantageous?
For the benefit in kind usually yes: electric sits at the 4 percent minimum, so the benefit often lands on the statutory minimum. For the employer electric cars are also far more tax-deductible, which explains why new company cars are going electric en masse.
