Standby allowance

A standby allowance is what you receive for being on call outside working hours: a fixed amount per standby day or week, plus wages (often with overtime supplement) for actual interventions. Amounts are set per collective agreement or company.

How does standby duty work financially?

A standby allowance usually has two parts. The first is the availability fee: a fixed amount per day or week of standby, simply because you must remain reachable, even if the phone never rings. The second part is the intervention pay: if you are actually called out, those hours are paid as working time, often with a supplement because they fall outside normal hours, plus travel time according to your company's rules.

What is common in technical roles?

Amounts differ strongly per sector and company; there is no statutory minimum for the availability fee itself. So when a vacancy mentions standby duty, always ask concretely: how often am I on call (one week per month is common in a team of four), what is the fixed fee, how are interventions and travel time paid, and can I solve issues by phone or must I go on site?

What to watch for
