Outplacement
Outplacement is guidance towards a new job, paid by your former employer. If you are 45 or older with at least a year of service, you are entitled to 60 hours of guidance over six months. With a notice period of 30 weeks or more, the general scheme applies: 60 hours worth one twelfth of your annual pay.
Two schemes
The general scheme applies when your notice period is at least 30 weeks (or the corresponding severance): you get 60 hours of guidance worth one twelfth of your annual pay, within a minimum and maximum amount. The special scheme is for those aged 45 or over, with at least one year of uninterrupted service and a shorter notice period: also 60 hours, spread over six months. Dismissal for urgent cause gives no entitlement.
What do you concretely get?
A professional coach helps you with your personal assessment, your CV, interview training, networking and keeping your search strategy on track. In practice the value lies mainly in the structure and the mirror: someone thinking along at the moment you lose your bearings. The guidance is separate from your severance and legally does not come off it, except where the law explicitly provides for offsetting.
Mind the deadlines
Your employer must make the offer within 15 days after the end of the employment relationship; if you receive nothing, send a registered notice of default within the statutory term. Refusing a valid offer without reason risks suspension of your unemployment benefit. We often see outplacement as complementary to our own guidance: send us your profile, even if you are already in a programme.
Frequently asked questions
Does outplacement cost me anything?
No, your employer pays. In the general scheme the value (one twelfth of your annual pay) is deducted from your severance when it is paid in money: you effectively exchange four weeks of pay for the guidance. In the scheme for over-45s it comes fully on top of your rights.
Do I have to accept outplacement?
In the over-45 scheme yes, if you want unemployment benefits: refusing or not cooperating can lead to suspension. In the general scheme participation is your choice, but note you already paid for its value through the deduction from your severance.
