As an HVAC technician you make climate installations do what they should: heat, cool and ventilate, efficiently and without failure. You work on heat pumps, chillers, air handling units and controls, at customers or on one fixed site.
The energy transition only makes this profession more important: boiler rooms are being replaced by heat pumps everywhere and cooling is becoming critical, from offices to data centers. HVAC technicians with a refrigeration certificate are among the most sought-after profiles in Belgium.
What does a HVAC technician do?
- Perform preventive maintenance on heating, ventilation and cooling installations
- Diagnose and repair breakdowns, from burners to refrigerant circuits and controls
- Balance installations for optimal comfort and energy consumption
- Follow up legal inspections and certificates, such as refrigerant leak checks
- Advise customers on replacement, sustainability and energy savings
What do you need to master?
- Training in refrigeration, heating or electromechanics, or equivalent through experience
- The refrigeration certificate (category I) for working on refrigerant circuits
- Knowledge of burners, heat pumps and controls; basic electrical knowledge is a must
- Working independently at customers and communicating clearly about your findings
- Driving licence B; standby duty is common in service companies
