The rules that apply to every system

A shift premium is in the collective agreement, but the limits of your roster are in the law. Per system you can read which of these rules apply and how:

Frequently asked questions about shift work

What are the downsides of shift work?

Shift work shifts your sleep, your meals and your social life. The more nights and weekends your system contains, the bigger that effect: two shifts is the lightest, full-continuous the heaviest. The premium deserves attention too: if you later move to a day role, it disappears. The article on the pros and cons lists what to ask beforehand.

Which shift system suits you?

If you want no nights, two shifts or a day role are the options. If you want a fixed rhythm and sleep well during the day, fixed nights may suit you. If you want long blocks of days off and accept weekend work, full-continuous fits. If you want to keep your week free, a weekend shift is an option. Compare the systems in the table and read per system what it asks of you.

May your employer oblige you to work nights?

Agreement no. 46 applies to rosters with night performances: at hiring only on a voluntary basis, unless your training led you to a profession that normally involves night work. If not all colleagues in your company or department work such a roster, a later move is in principle voluntary too, unless an agreement settles it differently. For shifts without night performances your employment contract and the work rules set your schedule.

What extra do you earn working shifts?

A shift premium is not in the law but in the agreement of your joint committee or company. For rosters with night performances, agreement no. 49 also guarantees an allowance per night hour, unless your sector or company arranged it before 1995. The premium per sector and per system, with source, is in the shift premium hub.
