Certificates for technicians in Belgium: what you need

Five certificates that keep coming back in technical vacancies. Per certificate you read what the law really says, how you get it, how long it stays valid and how you find it again, each time with the source next to it. What no official source says is not here.

CertificateWho needs itValidityHow to get it
BA4 and BA5 (instructed and skilled person)Anyone working on or near electrical installations at workNo statutory term; tied to the employer and the installationEmployer grants it after training or experience and a risk analysis; no exam
VCA diploma (B-VCA, VOL-VCA, VIL-VCU)Operational staff (B-VCA) and supervisors (VOL-VCA) of VCA-certified contractorsTen years from the exam dateExam at an exam centre recognised by BeSaCC-VCA
Refrigeration certificate (category I to IV)Anyone installing, maintaining, leak-checking or recovering refrigerant on installations with F-gasesFlanders: indefinite, with a refresher exam every five yearsExam (theory, practice, brazing) at a recognised training centre, then registration with VEKA
Forklift certificateAnyone driving a forklift, reach truck, stacker or order picker at workNo statutory term; BeSaCC IS-001 certificate five years; refresher as the employer decidesTraining with theory and practical test at a training centre, VDAB or the employer
Aerial platform certificate (IS-005, IPAF)Anyone operating a scissor lift, telescopic or articulated boom liftNo statutory term; IS-005 and IPAF PAL Card five yearsTheory and practical exam at a training centre; IS-005 at a BeSaCC-recognised centre

None of these certificates is a government diploma, except the regional recognition as refrigeration technician. For BA4/BA5, forklift and aerial platform the employer arranges the training and the competence; for VCA the client demands it.
