Process operator
The operator who runs and monitors an automated installation: following process parameters, adjusting and intervening safely when the process deviates.
As a process operator you run a production installation from the control room and in the field. You follow process values, carry out checks and changeovers and are the first to respond when an alarm goes off. In modern factories you work with DCS or SCADA systems and digital registration.
The profession is one of the most accessible entry points into industry: many employers teach you the trade internally, and with shift premiums the net pay is often well above comparable day jobs. At the same time it is a trade with depth: an experienced operator who knows their process inside out is worth gold and grows into senior operator, team leader or process improvement roles.
What does a Process operator do?
- Starting up, operating and shutting down installations according to procedures
- Following process values, alarms and product quality in the control system
- Carrying out rounds, sampling and first-line checks in the field
- Analysing deviations and adjusting, in consultation with production and maintenance
- Performing changeovers, cleaning and small first-line maintenance
- Recording production data and handling the shift handover
What do you need to master?
- Technical degree (electromechanics, process, chemistry) or strong technical interest; many employers train internally
- Alert and procedurally strong: safety and quality over speed
- Basic knowledge of control systems (DCS, SCADA, HMI) is an asset
- Willingness to work shifts or full-continuous
- Team player with a careful, calm working style

Is shift work mandatory as a process operator?
