Industry 4.0: what digitalisation means for your technical job

Robots, sensors and data are changing the factory, but not replacing the technician. They do change which technician is worth most.

Sensors predicting wear, robots working alongside operators, dashboards following every machine live: industry 4.0 stopped being future talk in Belgian factories a long time ago. The question for technical profiles is not whether this changes your job, but how you profit from it.

The physical world is not going anywhere

First the reassuring news: bearings wear out, pipes leak and robots need maintenance themselves. What shifts is the centre of gravity: less time on recurring checks that sensors take over, more on analysis, tuning and improving processes based on data. The checklist round becomes the exception; the intervention triggered by a vibration alarm the norm. That makes the work more interesting, but it also demands a different reflex: look in the system first, then walk to the machine.

The new top profile speaks two languages

This creates a new top profile: the technician who speaks both languages. Someone who can replace a bearing and understand the trend graph that predicted its wear, who can fix a breakdown and look up in the system how often it recurs, is worth more to modern factories than a specialist in only one of those worlds. You see it in the vacancies: terms like CMMS, SCADA, data analysis and predictive maintenance appear in profiles that used to be purely mechanical. And you see it in the pay: the combination profiles sit at the top of the salary bands.

How to learn it without going back to school

The good news: you learn that combination largely on the job. Every new machine, every monitoring system your employer installs is free training for whoever dives in instead of leaving it to a colleague. Actively ask to be involved in new installations, volunteer for the working group rolling out the new maintenance system, and don't let the supplier training pass you by. It is the cheapest career investment there is, and it's on your CV within a year.

Ask the question in reverse too

Applying somewhere soon? Ask about the site's digitalisation plans. Which systems are running, what is on the investment agenda, who gets to work with them? The answer tells you not only what you will learn there, but also how future-proof the company itself is. A site that doesn't invest in its machines rarely invests in its people.

Do I need to be able to code as a technician?

No. What does make the difference: being able to read systems. Interpreting a trend in the monitoring system, looking up a breakdown in the CMMS, adjusting parameters in an HMI. That is not programming, it is digital literacy, and you learn it on the job.

Will automation make technical jobs disappear?

The opposite: the shortage lists get longer every year. Every robot and automated line creates maintenance, programming and improvement work. What does disappear are the purely repetitive checking tasks, which is exactly why shifting your centre of gravity towards analysis and improvement pays off.
