Negotiating your pay feels awkward, but it doesn't have to be a fight. A level-headed approach in four steps.
Many technical profiles would rather negotiate with a supplier than about their own pay. A pity, because a well-prepared salary conversation isn't a fight but a normal part of every hire.
Step 1: know your range

Step 2: count the total package
In Belgium, gross salary is only part of the story. A company car with fuel card, meal vouchers, group insurance, bonuses and extra holidays can make the gap between two offers bigger or smaller than the gross figures suggest. Compare packages, not isolated numbers.
Step 3: back up your ask
Asking for more because you're worth it only works if you show why. Point to what you've delivered: the installation you managed independently, the project you brought in on budget, the recurring failure you fixed for good. Results negotiate better than years of service.
Step 4: leave room in the conversation
Name a range instead of a single figure and say what matters to you besides pay: training, flexibility, growth. That gives the employer several ways to reach an agreement. And if the answer on the number is no, ask what it would take to get there within six months.
