The technician who keeps installations running: solving breakdowns, performing preventive maintenance and protecting production against downtime.
As a maintenance technician you're the first call when a machine stops, and the reason it rarely does. You combine electricity, mechanics and increasingly automation in one job, split between breakdown interventions and planned maintenance.
It's one of the most sought-after technical professions in Belgium: nearly every production site, data center and facility company needs them. That translates into strong pay, shift premiums and plenty of choice across sectors.
What does a Maintenance technician do?
- Locate and repair breakdowns on mechanical, electrical and pneumatic installations
- Perform preventive maintenance to schedule and log the results in the maintenance system (CMMS)
- Analyse recurring breakdowns and propose structural improvements
- Work with production, contractors and the safety department
- Manage spare parts and keep technical documentation up to date
What do you need to master?
- A technical education in electromechanics, electrical engineering or equivalent through experience
- Reading electrical schematics and measuring with the common instruments
- Electrical competence attestation and often a VCA safety certificate
- Analysing breakdowns independently and staying calm under time pressure
- Willingness to work shifts or standby duty, depending on the site

How do you grow?
The classic path runs via senior technician to maintenance supervisor or work planner. If you prefer staying technical, you specialise in a technology such as HVAC, high voltage or instrumentation; those expert roles often pay as much as a leadership position.
Moving to field service (customer installations instead of one site) or into automation is also common, especially with additional PLC training.

Do I need a degree to become a maintenance technician?
A degree in electromechanics helps, but isn't a must. Employers mainly look at what you can do: those who built the same skills through a training programme, the army or years of hands-on experience get hired just as well. Attestations such as electrical competence and VCA often weigh more than the degree itself.
Do I have to work shifts as a maintenance technician?
Not everywhere. Full-continuous production sites run shifts, but plenty of day roles exist: building services, utilities, field service and smaller production environments. Be clear about what you want when applying; we filter on it with you.
