What does a maintenance technician earn in Belgium?

A maintenance technician in Belgium typically earns between 2,900 and 4,200 euros gross per month. Straight out of school or coming in sideways, you usually start around 2,900 to 3,500 euros. With five to ten years of experience you sit closer to 3,250 to 3,950 euros, and senior technicians with a specialisation reach 3,600 to 4,200 euros. What pushes the range up or down

Three things explain almost the whole difference. Experience weighs heaviest, but proven experience: someone who independently diagnoses faults on installations with PLC control, frequency drives or high voltage moves through the range faster than someone who mostly walked preventive rounds. Next comes the sector. Chemicals, petrochemicals, pharma and food pay structurally better than building services, retail maintenance or smaller machine builders, because an hour of downtime costs real money there. Finally the region: around the port of Antwerp, in the Kempen and in Flemish Brabant, pay sits noticeably higher than in rural areas, partly because sites compete with each other. Attestations such as electrical competence (BA4/BA5), VCA or a refrigeration certificate rarely lift you a full step in one go, but they do open the doors of the sites paying at the top end.

What comes on top of your base salary

In industry your gross salary almost always comes with a package. Work shifts and the shift premium adds 5 to 12 percent in a two-shift system and 20 to 30 percent for fixed nights or full-continuous work. On standby duty you get a standby allowance plus overtime pay for the hours you actually work. On top of that: double holiday pay, an end-of-year premium, meal vouchers, hospitalisation insurance and in many cases group insurance. Field service usually comes with a van or company car. Add it up and a technician on 3,200 euros base in a full-continuous system lands on a total package that comfortably beats a day job at 3,600 euros.

From gross to net

Gross says little until you know what remains. Of 100 euros extra gross, a white-collar employee keeps roughly half, while shift and night work are partially exempt from payroll withholding tax and therefore weigh more heavily in net terms. Your statute matters too: blue-collar workers pay social security on 108 percent of their wage, which makes the net picture differ from a white-collar employee on exactly the same gross. How to grow your salary

The biggest jumps rarely come from the annual scale increase. They come from three moves: specialising in a technology few people master (instrumentation, high voltage, refrigeration, PLC), moving up to work preparation or maintenance supervisor, or switching to a sector where downtime is more expensive.
