Project engineer
The engineer who drives technical projects from plan to delivery: guarding scope, steering suppliers and bringing technology, budget and planning together.
As a project engineer you're the pivot between design and realisation. A new production line, an installation extension or a machine rebuild: you translate the request into a technical plan and drive the project until everything runs as agreed.
It's a role for those who like combining technology with organising. You calculate and design along, but your biggest impact comes from keeping suppliers, contractors and internal teams aligned, within budget and timing.
What does a Project engineer do?
- Prepare technical projects: draw up scope, specifications, budgets and planning
- Compare quotations and select and steer suppliers and contractors
- Guard the design during execution and technically assess changes
- Coordinate safety, quality and acceptance tests through to handover to production or maintenance
- Report to steering group or management on progress, risks and budget
What do you need to master?
- A bachelor or master in a technical field, often electromechanics or construction
- A few years of field experience make the difference: knowing execution means planning realistically
- Project-based working: planning, budget follow-up and risk management
- Strong communication with everyone from shop floor to board and external parties
- Languages are an asset: many projects run with international suppliers

How do you grow?
The classic line runs to senior project engineer and project manager, with ever larger budgets and teams. If you prefer technical depth, you grow towards lead engineer or engineering manager.

What's the difference between a project engineer and a project manager?
