As a prevention advisor you watch over safety, health and wellbeing at work. You run risk analyses, investigate incidents, advise management and make sure the legal obligations of the wellbeing act actually land on the shop floor.
Every Belgian employer must have a prevention advisor, and industrial environments require the higher levels. Demand has outstripped supply for years, making certified prevention advisors one of the most secure technical careers in the country.
What does a Prevention advisor do?
- Run risk analyses and translate them into concrete action plans and instructions
- Investigate work accidents and incidents and propose structural measures
- Draw up and follow up the global prevention plan and annual action plan
- Organise safety walks, toolbox meetings and trainings
- Advise management and supervisors on wellbeing, from machine safety to psychosocial risks
What do you need to master?
- The legal prevention advisor certificate: level 3 as a base, level 2 or 1 for industrial environments
- A technical background helps strongly in production and construction environments
- Knowledge of the wellbeing act, the codex and risk analysis methods
- Convincing without hierarchical power: from operator to board
- Precise reporting and file management for inspection and insurers

€3,200 – €4,800 gross per month

How do you grow?
The level system is your career ladder: starting at level 3, evening courses take you to level 2 and 1, each time with larger organisations and heavier risks as your terrain. Many employers pay for that training in full.
Beyond that, paths lead to QHSE manager, adding quality and environment, or to external prevention services and consultancy, advising several companies at once.

Roughly 3,200 to 4,800 euros gross per month, depending on your level, the sector and the size of the organisation. Level 1 profiles in Seveso environments sit at the top of that range and often above it.
What's the difference between prevention advisor level 1, 2 and 3?
The level determines where you may practise: level 3 suffices for smaller companies with limited risks, level 2 is required from mid-sized industrial employers and level 1 for the largest, highest-risk sites. Each step requires a recognised additional course.
Can I become a prevention advisor from a technical role?
Yes, and it's one of the strongest profiles. Someone who knows the shop floor as a technician or site supervisor wins the trust of the people they need to convince much faster. The level 2 course combines well with a job and is often paid by the employer.
