Refrigeration certificate (category I-IV)

Anyone working on cooling installations with fluorinated refrigerants needs a personal refrigeration certificate, divided into categories I to IV according to the type of work. Category I is the most complete and the standard for refrigeration technicians; the company itself must be certified too.

Why is it mandatory?

The European F-gas regulation and regional rules (in Flanders via VLAREL) require certification for anyone performing actions on circuits with fluorinated refrigerants: installing, maintaining, leak checks, recovery. The rules tighten as high-GWP refrigerants are phased out, making certified technicians scarcer and more valuable every year.

The categories

Category I covers all actions regardless of refrigerant content and is what employers ask of a refrigeration technician by default. Category II covers smaller quantities plus leak checks, III only recovery, IV only leak checks without opening the circuit. The exam (theory plus practice) is taken at a recognised exam centre; separate schemes exist for alternative refrigerants such as CO2 and ammonia.

Renewal and refresher training

In Flanders your certificate must be updated every five years through refresher training or a new exam. Employers almost always pay for this: it is their legal basis for deploying you.
