A technical sales engineer in Belgium typically earns between 3,200 and 5,000 euros gross fixed per month. Starters with a technical background begin around 3,200 to 3,800 euros, with a proven client portfolio you sit between 3,700 and 4,400 euros, and senior sales engineers with key accounts or an own region reach 4,300 to 5,000 euros fixed. But unlike the other professions in this series, fixed pay is only half the story here: the commission scheme determines your real income. The range comes from our technical sales engineer profile and our vacancy ranges.

The variable scheme determines everything

A common variable reward sits between 10 and 30 percent on top of fixed pay, tied to revenue, margin or design wins. Watch three things in every offer: is the ceiling open or capped, is it calculated on revenue or margin (margin is fairer and better influenced through technical advice), and what happens in your first year, when your portfolio still has to grow? A good starter package guarantees the variable part for six to twelve months. Distrust schemes that mainly depress fixed pay: a strong technical sales engineer should have solid fixed pay, because their advice is value in itself.

What comes on top

The company car with fuel or charging card is simply a tool in field roles, also for private use. Add: net expense allowance for representation, phone and laptop, meal vouchers, group insurance and hospitalisation insurance. Calculate the total package annually: fixed plus realistic variable plus car plus allowances. In negotiation, ask what the average team member actually earned in variable last year; that says more than the theoretical maximum.

From gross to net

Commissions and bonuses are taxed as ordinary pay, at your marginal rate: of a 5,000 euro gross bonus about 2,000 euros net remains. Some employers therefore offer warrants or a profit premium as a fiscally friendlier alternative. And the centenindex since 2026 caps a piece of indexation above 4,000 euros fixed. Calculate your package with the gross-to-net calculator and treat the variable part separately.

How to grow your income

In sales your income grows with your portfolio, and you partly carry that in your head: product knowledge, sector knowledge and relationships. The big jumps sit in moving to key account management, to a more expensive product segment (from components to systems or projects) or to a principal with better margins. Those staying technically strong keep standing out from smooth talkers; in industry, trust beats patter. Frequently asked questions

Can I become a technical sales engineer without a sales background?

Yes, and it happens constantly: employers prefer a technician or engineer learning to convince clients over a salesperson having to learn technology. Your technical credibility is the hardest part to teach. Start at a principal with a solid sales programme and a guaranteed variable in your first year.

Is higher fixed pay or higher commission better?

For your security and later rights (holiday pay, year-end premium, pension, severance: all calculated on fixed pay) fixed pay wins. Only choose a commission-heavy scheme if the ceiling is open, the market grows and you have proven you can handle it. Negotiate fixed first, then variable.
