Weekend shift work: roster, rules and pay
A weekend crew works on Saturday and Sunday, when the weekday crews are off. That keeps an installation running without the weekday crews losing their weekend. The shifts are longer, the week is free.
Example roster, weekend shift (every week)
| Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat | Sun | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weekend crew, day | off | off | off | off | off | 6-18 | 6-18 |
| Weekend crew, night | off | off | off | off | off | 18-6 | 18-6 |
| Weekday crew, early | 6-14 | 6-14 | 6-14 | 6-14 | 6-14 | off | off |
| Weekday crew, late | 14-22 | 14-22 | 14-22 | 14-22 | 14-22 | off | off |
Example: every company makes its own roster. The day weekend crew works Saturday and Sunday from 06:00 to 18:00, the night weekend crew from 18:00 to 06:00; there are 12 hours of rest between two shifts each time. That is 24 hours per weekend. How your contract and pay translate those hours differs per company and per agreement.
In which sectors
You see weekend crews in production and maintenance, where an installation must also run at weekends but the company does not want to introduce full-continuous.
What this system asks of you
- Long 12-hour shifts, two days in a row.
- Working every weekend, exactly when the people around you are off.
- Independence: at weekends staffing is thinner and services such as purchasing or planning are not there.
Advantages
- Your whole week is free for study, family or something else.
- A fixed rhythm: the same every weekend.
- Little traffic on the way to work.
Disadvantages
- No more weekends with friends and family.
- 12-hour shifts are hard, especially as night shifts.
- How your pay and contract translate the weekend hours differs greatly per company: ask precisely.

What does the law say?
A weekend crew deviates from Sunday rest and, with 12-hour shifts, from the ordinary daily limit, so the employer introduces it through a new work scheme or another legal exception. A shift then lasts at most 12 hours. The day weekend crew from 06:00 to 18:00 falls entirely between 06:00 and midnight; the night weekend crew works between midnight and 05:00 and is a scheme with night performances, with agreements no. 46 and no. 49.
Weekend shifts as a new work scheme
The Federal Employment Service names weekend shifts as an example of a new work scheme (Act of 17 March 1987 and agreement no. 42 of the National Labour Council). After negotiation at joint committee level or, if that yields nothing, in the company, an employer may use it to deviate from rules including Sunday rest and the public holiday rules, and for instance hire people who only work at weekends or on public holidays. A working day may then last at most 12 hours. It is not the only route: sometimes the ordinary procedure through the work rules is enough.

Sunday work and weekly rest
Working on Sunday is in principle prohibited (article 11 of the Labour Act). In successive shifts it is allowed if the work stops each week for 24 consecutive hours, at least 18 of them on Sunday (article 17): the last shift therefore stops at 06:00 on Sunday at the latest and the first shift of the new week starts at 18:00 on Sunday at the earliest. Companies where the work by its nature cannot be interrupted or postponed may have people work on Sunday (article 66). Whoever works on Sunday gets compensatory rest in the six days after; that does not apply to shift work within the 24-hour rule above.

Rest between two shifts
Between the end of your work and the restart there are in principle at least 11 consecutive hours of rest (article 38ter of the Labour Act; agreement no. 46 says the same). Together with the weekly rest that gives a break of 35 consecutive hours a week. In shift and continuous work the rest may be shorter at the moment you change shifts, but working two shifts back to back is always prohibited.

What counts as night work
Work between 20:00 and 06:00 is night work. Since 1 June 2026 night work is in principle no longer prohibited in the sectors covered by the Labour Act of 16 March 1971 (Act of 18 May 2026). If you usually work between 20:00 and 06:00, always with work between midnight and 05:00, that is a work scheme with night performances within the meaning of article 38 of the Labour Act: your employer introduces it through a collective agreement or the work rules, after consultation. A roster that only falls outside midnight to 05:00, such as 14:00 to 22:00 or 05:00 to 13:00, is also night work, but not a night scheme within the meaning of article 38. In distribution and e-commerce, separate night premium rules apply to people who start from 1 June 2026.

What it pays
A shift premium is not in the law but in the agreement of your joint committee or company. The shift premium hub shows per sector what applies; look at the column "Weekend".

Frequently asked questions
What is a weekend shift?
A weekend crew only works on Saturday and Sunday, and sometimes on public holidays, so that an installation keeps running while the weekday crews are off. The Federal Employment Service names weekend shifts as an example of a new work scheme.
How many hours do you work in a weekend shift?
In a new work scheme a working day may last at most 12 hours. In the example roster you work two 12-hour shifts, so 24 hours per weekend. Whether that is a part-time contract or paid as full-time depends on your employment contract and the agreement.
May you work Sundays and public holidays in a weekend shift?
Yes, if your employer introduces the scheme correctly. Through a new work scheme the employer may deviate from Sunday rest and the public holiday rules, and hire people who only work at weekends or on public holidays. Those deviations must be expressly included in the agreement that introduces the scheme.
Do you get a premium for weekend work?
How much extra you get for weekend work is set by your sector or company agreement. If you work in the night weekend crew, at least the hourly allowance of agreement no. 49 applies to those nights, unless your sector or company arranged it before 1995. The arrangement per joint committee is in the shift premium hub.
This page summarises the legal rules and is not legal advice. Your work rules, your sector agreement and your payroll provider remain the final word.
