Standby duty (on-call)
Standby duty means being on call outside working hours for urgent interventions, usually in rotation with colleagues. You receive a standby allowance for it, plus payment for actual interventions.
How is standby organised?
In technical teams standby usually rotates weekly: with four colleagues you are on call one week per month. During that week you keep the phone with you, stay within reasonable distance of the site and limit alcohol. Some breakdowns are solved by phone or from home (especially with modern monitoring), for others you drive on site.
Compensation
The financial side consists of a fixed standby allowance for availability and payment per intervention, often with a supplement and travel time. Exact amounts differ strongly per company; ask for them concretely when applying.
What makes standby workable?
Three things: the frequency (one week in four is common, one in two is heavy), the number of actual call-outs (a stable installation makes standby light; an ancient line makes it a second job), and the recovery arrangement after night interventions. When applying for a maintenance role with standby, ask for the average number of call-outs per week: that single number says more than the entire work regulations.
Frequently asked questions
How far from work may I live during standby?
There is no legal distance; companies usually apply a maximum response time, often 30 to 45 minutes. If you live further away, some employers offer overnight facilities or the role is not feasible. Discuss this early in the application process.
Does a night call-out count as night work?
The intervention hours are working time and are paid with the supplements your agreement provides for nights and overtime. Also mind rest times: after a night intervention you are entitled to compensatory rest under your company's rules, so you don't start an ordinary day shift unrested.
