Two shifts (early and late)
In a two-shift system an early shift (for example 6 am-2 pm) and a late shift (2-10 pm) alternate weekly. It is the most common shift system in Belgian industry, compensated with a shift premium.
What does the rhythm look like?
The classic pattern is one week early (starting between 5 and 6 am) and one week late (ending between 9 and 10 pm), alternating weekly. You know weeks in advance when you work, and every day has a block of free time: afternoons and evenings in the early week, mornings in the late week.
What does it pay?
For two shifts the shift premium usually sits between 5 and 12 percent, depending on your joint committee. That is less than nights or full-continuous, but the rhythm is also considerably lighter: you sleep at home every night at more or less normal hours.
Who does it suit?
For many technicians and operators two shifts is the best balance between extra pay and a liveable rhythm. The early week gives free afternoons (handy with children or a side activity), the late week free mornings. If you struggle with early rising or late evenings, you feel it mainly in the changeover weeks. Browse our shift vacancies with salary ranges included.
Frequently asked questions
What do 2 shifts mean concretely for my hours?
Typically: week 1 from around 6 am to 2 pm, week 2 from 2 to 10 pm, alternating continuously. Exact hours differ per company and are in the work regulations. Weekends are usually free in a pure two-shift system.
Are two shifts hard to sustain?
It is the mildest shift system: no nights, sleeping at home every day. Switching between early and late weeks takes some sleep discipline, but most people are used to it after a few weeks.
