Fixed nights
With fixed nights you permanently work the night shift, usually 10 pm to 6 am, instead of rotating. The system combines the highest premium supplements with a stable (though inverted) rhythm, and is popular with those who deliberately choose nights.
Why do people deliberately choose nights?
Fixed nights have a surprisingly loyal following. The rhythm is stable (no changeover weeks like rotation), the night premium is the highest of all systems, nobody looks over your shoulder and traffic does not exist at your hours. If you want to exercise, care or work on projects during the day, you gain usable hours.
What do you earn?
Fixed night crews get the highest premium percentage in most industrial agreements, often 20 to 30 percent, sometimes topped up with an attendance premium. Together with the favourable tax regime for night work, the net difference with a day role is substantial; our fixed-night vacancies show the range right away.
Health and safeguards
Permanently working nights takes discipline: a dark bedroom, fixed sleeping hours and a family that plays along. Employers must have night workers medically monitored periodically, and older night workers have conditional rights to switch to day work. In all honesty: not everyone sustains this for years, but those it suits rarely want to go back.
Frequently asked questions
Are fixed nights healthier than rotating nights?
Research points both ways, but many night workers find a fixed rhythm more bearable than switching: your body adapts to one pattern instead of recovering every week. The key is consistent sleep, not fully switching back on days off.
Do fixed nights include weekends?
It depends on the company: in a five-day week you run nights from Sunday or Monday night to Friday morning; in continuous environments weekend nights can be in the roster too, at extra supplement. Ask for the exact roster before signing.
